Inbox zero
Mark Done, undo, labels, selection and bulk actions.
Every triage key works on the conversation under the cursor, on every selected conversation, or on the open thread.
Mark Done
E marks a conversation done: it leaves the Inbox and stays in your mail (Gmail calls this archiving). In an open thread, the next conversation opens. ⇧E moves it back to the Inbox.
Undo
- Z undoes the last action while its message shows at the bottom of the window (10 seconds).
- ⌘Z undoes after that, back through your last 50 actions.
If nothing changed, the message says why, for example "Already in Spam". If Gmail refuses a change, the message turns red and the conversation comes back.
Star, read, trash, spam
| Press | To |
|---|---|
| S | Star or unstar |
| U | Mark read or unread |
| # | Trash (in Trash, it moves back to the Inbox) |
| ! | Mark as spam |
| ⇧M | Mute: new replies stay out of the Inbox |
Labels
- L adds or removes a label. Type a new name to create one.
- V moves: adds a label and marks the conversation done.
- Y removes the label of the view you're in. ⇧Y removes every label and marks it done.
- [ and ] remove the label and go to the previous or next conversation.
Select several
X selects a conversation. ⇧J and ⇧K extend the selection, ⌘A selects everything from here down, and Esc clears it.
Filters
In a list, ⇧U shows only unread, ⇧S starred, ⇧I important and ⇧R conversations waiting on your reply. They stack, and Esc clears them.
Get Me To Zero
Open ⌘K → Get Me To Zero to mark everything older than a day, a week or a month done in one go, keeping unread or starred mail if you like. You can undo any bulk action for 7 days from ⌘K → Bulk Actions.
Unsubscribe and block
⌘U unsubscribes from a mailing list, and can clear that sender's mail from your Inbox at the same time. ⌘K → Block keeps a sender or a whole domain out of your Inbox.
